Some Fun Facts About the Story of Jesus’ Birth
Did you know that the three gifts that the wisemen brought – gold, frankincense, and myrrh – represented Jesus’ kingship (gold), his divinity or holiness (frankinsence, used in worship), and his coming death (myrrh, used to prepare bodies for burial)? The wisemen knew that this new king, the Messiah, was born because of the star that appeared in the sky.
Some scholars also think that the wisemen might have taken up to two years to get to Jesus after the star appeared (after his birth). This means that they may have presented these gifts to Jesus as a toddler, instead of to baby Jesus in the manger.
Regardless of when these gifts arrived, the story of Jesus’ birth reminds us that many people from different walks of life – shepherds, King Herod, the wisemen – were waiting for this coming Messiah. Christmas is the time of remember when the true King and saviour of the world took on human nature and was born in a manger in a town called Bethlehem. His birth shook the whole world, bringing about reactions as diverse as adoration and worship (the shepherds and the wisemen) to outrage and jealousy (Herod).
How will we remember Jesus’ birth each year?
