Our family wasn’t in the habit of praying over our home until recently. In fact, I encountered the whole idea of praying over your home for the first time while reading Leanne Cabral’s book A Parent’s Best Gift. There, she writes about guarding our homes against spiritual attacks. Makes sense, right?
Our living space is an extension of ourselves. It’s where we raise children, and entertain guests. It’s where we eat, sleep, spend our quiet time, and it’s sometimes where we work. A lot of our lives are lived out in our homes. So praying over them, praying for God’s protection, guidance, and blessing, is like setting up spiritual boundaries, fences designed to keep out anxiety, fear, and strife.
In her book, Cabral asks us to imagine a few scenarios. One in particular struck a cord with me: “You arrive home after a great day out. You are happy and energized – excited to embrace family life. As you exit your car and walk in the front door ‘all hell breaks loose.’ You go from excited to exasperated, delighted to defeated – from elated to anger in a matter of seconds…”
I have two boys, 6-years-old when I was reading this scenario, so yes, yes that sounds like us. Cabral suggests that our home is a battlefield that the enemy likes to drop in on, and that his tactics might be subtle, like encouraging stress and unrest in our homes.
The next day – I kid you not – as we walk into our house after a day of something…maybe it was church, or the beach, or the park…my kids almost immediately start arguing and fighting.
“Hey guys,” I say. “I read a book recently that says that sometimes the devil tries to get us to fight and argue with each other in our homes. As soon as we come home, fights break out. Like just now. And the woman who writes the book said that praying over our home can help to get rid of that. So what do you think? Should we try it?”
The kids were on board.
So after some planning, and finding some prayers for each room of our house, we walked through our home and prayed over the entryway, the living room, the kitchen, and all the rooms of our house.
It was adorable, actually. One twin decided that he was going to keep a record or our prayers and made a ‘prayer map’. (I have that hanging on a wall in our house now.) He drew all the rooms as we prayed over them. He also insisted that we pray over the staircase and the bathroom.
The bathroom? Really? Okay.
“Do you want to pray over the bathroom?” I asked him. Because honestly, I was at a loss. How do I pray over a bathroom? How do I pray over a staircase? Turns out my kids are more creative and inventive than I am.
At the end of it all, we did in fact have more peace in our house. There was less bickering and arguing, especially during that ‘immediately arriving home’ period of the day.
And what was perhaps best about our prayer experiment was that it drew the kids into prayer. It engaged them and let them be creative in talking with God. They were interested and they participated willingly. (And, let me tell you, once I find a spiritual practice that my kids actually want to do, I stick with it.)
Why Pray Over Your Home?
There are plenty of reasons to pray over our homes, and plenty of passages from Scripture that suggest the benefit of doing so.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says: These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
While we are not literally writing passages of Scripture on our doorframes and gates, we can pray Scripture over our homes and thus inscribe the words of God on our hearts and on our homes.
By having our kids participate in praying over our homes, we are also impressing truths of Scripture on our children, and teaching them to pray and to rely on God.
Joshua, in addressing the people of Israel, encourages them to serve the Lord and abandon their idols: But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15)
The fact is that we all serve someone or something. Whether it’s God, financial security, comfort, worldly success, family…there is something that stands central in our lives that we put our efforts and energies – whether consciously or unconsciously – towards serving.
Like Joshua, make the one you serve the Lord God. You can do this, in a small way, by praying passages of Scripture over your home and asking God to protect and lead your family.
By praying passages of Scripture over our home, we are taking the words of God and praying them back to him, asking him to fulfill his promises in our lives and our homes.
Like the wise builder, we are building our home – and our lives – upon a rock, so that when the storms come and the waters rise, we have a firm foundation upon which we can rest.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. (Matthew 7:24-27)
Praying over your home will allow you to:
- Pray for the people who live in your home.
- Pray for your home to be a haven and a refuge for those you love.
- Pray for your home to be a shining light of love and truth in the darkness.
- Pray for God to take up residence in your home and for him to be central in the lives of your family.
- Pray for protection from evil, for peace, unity, and rest.
- Pray for provision.
- Pray for guidance.
- Pray for peace and unity.
- Pray for salvation.
How to Cover Your Home in Prayer
Covering your home in prayer is really quite simple, though it may feel awkward at first if you are not in the habit of praying out loud. (It felt quite awkward for us at first, and I made sure that I found prayers that I could follow for each room of our house, instead of praying impromptu, which was far out of my comfort zone at the time.)
A simple prayer walk through your home will allow you to pray for God’s protection and guidance, for peace and unity within your home, for faithfulness and rest, among other things.
You can quite simply cover your home in prayer by physically walking through your house and praying for God’s protection and blessing, as well as thanking him for his provision in your life.
A prayer walk through your home is a great way to center a new home around Christ. It is also a great way to refresh and renew a home that you have lived in for months or years.
Praying over each room of your home will allow you to write God’s truths on your doorframes and inscribe them in your heart. Doing this regularly will help those Biblical truths to sink deeper into your home, your life, and the lives of your family. It will also help solidify God’s reign in your life.
Below you’ll find some simple prayers and pieces of Scripture that you can pray over each room of your house.
I would also encourage you to get creative and personalize your prayers. Pray specifically for each family member. Pray for particular circumstances that your family is facing. And if you have kids, get them involved. Let them pray if they want to, or encourage them to get creative in participating in your prayer walk.
If you are nervous about praying out loud, simply follow the prayers provided below. As you make out-loud prayer more of a habit, your confidence and your comfort level will grow.
Prayers for Your Home, Room by Room
As you walk through your home, here are some prayers that you can say, room by room.
Prayers for the Entryway
Lord, please bless everyone who walks through this door. Make our home a shining example of your truth and your love. Please help us to not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Help us to focus on what is eternal, not what is temporal. As we leave our home, clothe us in the armor of truth, righteousness, peace, and faith.
Scripture to Pray Over the Entryway
Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
2 Corinthians 4:18: “So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Ephesians 6:13-17: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Prayers for the Kitchen
God, thank you for the food that we have to eat. We pray for your provision in our homes and in our lives. As Jesus taught us, we pray for our daily bread: may you give us what we need for today, and may you remind us not to worry about tomorrow. We pray also for all those in our neigbourhood and beyond who do not have enough to eat. Please provide for them, and give us hearts to serve and to help them.
Scripture to Pray Over the Kitchen
Psalm 84:11: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
Matthew 6:11: “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Psalm 136:25: He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever.
Prayers for the Bedroom(s)
Lord, thank you for each member of this household. Thank you for __(name)__. I pray that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate __(name)__ from your love. Please protect __(name)__ from the schemes of the evil one. Give them rest and a good night’s sleep. Keep them safe and healthy. And help them to love you with all their heart and with all their soul and with all their mind and with all their strength.
Scripture for Pray Over the Bedroom(s)
Mark 12:30: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Numbers 6:24–26: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”
Psalm 4:8: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Personalize Your Bedroom Prayers
When you pray over your bedrooms, you can personalize your prayers to each member of your family. Our kids were struggling with nightmares, night terrors, and nose bleeds for a while, so we would consistently pray that God would “suck up all the bad dreams, nightmares, night terrors and nose bleeds.”
(You should know, first, that our kids are 7 years old, and second, that way back when they were about 3 years old, one twin was having nightmares about black holes that would suck him up. We prayed over the course of a few nights that God would take away those bad dreams. After a few nights of prayer, my little guy reported that he had a dream where God came and sucked up all the black holes like a giant vacuum cleaner. He never had those bad dreams again. Since I like to retell this story often, we are now in the habit of praying that God would “suck up” the bad stuff.)
Prayers for the Dining Room
God, thank for the time that we get to spend around the table with each other and with our friends and family. Please help us to show hospitality to all those who join us at our table. Guide our conversation as we gather together, and help us keep our hearts open to you.
Scripture to Pray over the Dining Room
Hebrews 4:7: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Romans 12:13: “Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality.”
Hebrews 13:2: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
Prayers for the Home Office
Lord, thank you for my/our ability to work, and for an occupation that supports the financial needs of our family. Help me/us to work with all my/our heart(s), as though working for you. Help me/us to keep you first. Help me/us to prevent money, career, and financial security from becoming an idol.
Scripture to Pray over the Home Office
Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
1 Corinthians 15:58: “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”
Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Prayers for the Living Room/Family Room
Lord, thank you for this space where we spend our lives together. Thank you for the entertainment and the fellowship that we enjoy here. Please help us to live at peace with each other, to be patient, humble, and gentle, and to forgive each other when we need forgiveness. Help us to choose our media wisely and to discern which voices build us up and which tear us down. Keep us from temptation and protect us from all evil. May our hearts and our minds be filled with your peace and your love, and may learn to direct our footsteps according to your word.
Scripture to Pray over the Living Room/Family Room
Romans 12:18:“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
Psalm 119:133: “Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.”
Ephesians 4: 2-3: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Philippians 4:7: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Matthew 6:13: “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Prayers for the Landry Room
Lord, thank you for the clothes that we have to wear. Thank you for our washer and dryer. Thank you for our ability to create a clean living environment for our family. Please give us joyful hearts, even in the repetitiveness of everyday tasks. Help us not to worry about what we should wear, what we should eat or drink. Remind us that you provide for the lilies and the birds. How much more will you provide for us?
Scripture to Pray over the Laundry Room
Matthew 6:28-34: “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Proverbs 17:22: “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
Prayers for the Bathroom
God, thank you for the access that we have to clean water and to sanitary conditions. Thank you for washing away our sins on the cross and renewing our relationship with you. Show us any areas in your lives that still need cleansing, and give us humble and repentant hearts. Cleanse us from our idols and renew a steadfast spirit within us.
Scripture to Pray over the Bathroom
Psalm 51:2: “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Psalm 51:10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Ezekiel 36:25: “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.”
Hebrews 1:3: “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

I’ve moved 4 times in the past 2 or 3 years. 4 new apartments and I’ve used this post to bless my last three (as well as one of my good friend’s homes as well, she was having awful sleep paralysis and said after the day we went through the prayers, it stopped). In one of my old apartments I would have horrible feelings of dread in the night and would feel like “something” dark was all around me. Almost like something was about to reveal itself to me. Like when you’re a kid taking a shower and close your eyes to shampoo and feel like a monster is about to grab you. That feeling is enough to drive you crazy and throw you straight into prayer. I blessed the home and still felt the need to research. Since it was such a strong feeling I wanted to find out if anything news worthy has happened there. We’ll as it turned out, a man had been shot in that apartment the year prior. He did survive. The bullet had hit his shoulder, but it made me realize there was indeed very dark energy in that space. Probably much more dark history than just that one story. After I blessed the home using this post I felt at peace. I felt at home finally. God came in and evicted the evil and it was such an incredible feeling. Tomorrow I have planned to once again go through this wonderful post and cleanse my new home. We don’t know what a space has gone through before us. We don’t know the types of traumas, heartaches, deaths, sins, or even ceremonies that may have taken place before us. Especially in apartments! It is CRUCIAL to bless your home immediately upon move in. I’ve waiting a couple of weeks because I’ve been so “busy” and man has my anger, anxiety and my depression flared up.. God checked my spirit tonight and reminded me that there is no such thing as too busy for prayer. We have health insurance and car insurance because we have to right? Life insurance? Yeah. This is soul insurance. It is not only free, but it is freeing. Glory to God for sending me this glorious reminder that I am not the cause for my bad feelings lately I’m just not doing anything at all to make it better. If we don’t run to God we will be overrun. Thank you Rebecca, and God bless you!
That is so frightening but also so encouraging, Chassity! I am glad that prayer has helped you so many times, and with ridding all the negative junk from your house. I had a similar experience with something that felt evil and using prayer to get rid of it. Those things do feel terrifying, but how awesome is it that we have a God who fights for us? Thanks so much for sharing your story!
