The First Christmas: Scripture Story Swap

Christmas nativity mad libs game

This fun Nativity fill in the blanks game is a Mad Libs inspired activity that tells the story of the first Christmas, with the opportunity for kids to add fun and silly words to the story.

This story is told from the point of view of a stable animal at the time of Jesus’ birth. The stable animal (which the kids will choose!) meets Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and the shepherds. This activity makes a great homeschool lesson, Sunday School activity, party game, or fun activity for any time. It makes a great complement to the nativity story, and a fun game for kids who are already familiar with the Bible story.

This story is written in such a way as to be fun and potentially silly, but also still respectful of the story of Jesus’ birth. A good rule of thumb to keep this activity reverent and respectful is to disallow any mean, inappropriate, or bathroom words. Keep your words clean and kind, but allow for some silliness.

Note: this is not the best way to teach the Christmas story. You want kids to be familiar with the real story first. But once they are familiar with the story, this is a fun way to add some silliness and interactivty to the story.

Ways to use this Mad Libs inspired Nativity story:

  • as a Sunday school activity
  • as a classroom activity
  • to complement a Bible lesson about the birth of Jesus
  • as a Christmas party game
  • as part of a homeschool lesson (teach Scripture and parts of speech!)
  • as a Messy Church game or activity
