This simple light and darkness collage is a great craft for toddlers and preschoolers to explore the first day of creation.
We are using this in our Messy Church this month, as part of our days of creation crafts.
(This is also a great way to practice some fine motor skills with your littles, and to get them to sort and organize by category - i.e. light and dark.)
The First Day of Creation (Genesis 1:3-5)
The Bible verse for our light and darkness collage:
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Light and Darkness Collage
This light and collage collage was super simple to make. My kids liked placing all the pieces of ripped paper on the page. E really liked placing his pieces of light and darkness in pretty meticulous rectangles. (I just slapped mine wherever! I'm clearly less organized and methodical than my 5 year old.)
Materials needed
- blank white paper
- black and yellow construction paper, ripped into squares
- glue
- a marker
We just wrote "light" and "darkness" on each half of the page and then glued our light and darkness pieces into a collage.
You could include a quote from Genesis 1:4, "God separated the light from the darkness".
This only took us about 5 minutes to complete, which means that it's a really good activity for kids with short attention spans. It also gives you the opportunity to talk about creation in bite-sized nuggets.
