Yarn Wrapped Stars

yarn wrapped star

We're using this yarn wrapped star craft as part of our Messy Church lesson on Genesis 1 (the creation story).

This is a simple craft that is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.  Older kids can experiment with different patterns (how you wrap the yarn changes how the star looks) and decorate the arms of the star with glitter, sequins, markers, etc.

God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. - Genesis 1:16

Materials Needed

  • white cardstock
  • scissors
  • yarn
  • glue (optional)
  • star template (optional)

I found a simple five-point star template on Google because, as it turns out, it is really hard to free hand a decent-looking star.

(Wikipedia has a good template.  So does Clip Art Mag.)

How to Make Your Yarn Wrapped Star

This is crazy simple.

  • Cut out your star from cardstock (adults should do this part for the littles - older kids can cut out their own stars).
  • Give the kids some yarn.
  • Wrap it once and either tie a knot or glue it down on the back.
  • Have the kids wrap the stars with their pieces of yarn.
  • Tie another knot or glue the end to the back when they're finished.
  • Optional: let the kids decorate the blank parts of the star with glitter, sequins, and markers.

What to Do with Your Stars

  • Tie some string on them and hang them in a window.
  • Use some sticky tack on the back and stick them on a wall.
  • Make SO MANY stars and decorate a whole wall with them.  (This is our next task!)

Bible Verses to Use with this Craft

This is a perfect Sunday school craft or Messy Church craft to go with the creation account in Genesis (Day 4).

Genesis 1:14-19:

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
