What does the Bible say about Love?
The Bible has quite a bit to say about both God’s love for us, and our love for each other. We are told to love one another, that by our love we will be recognized as disciples of Jesus, and that we ought to love one another as we love ourselves.
We are also told that God ought to be our top priority, our “first love”: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (Matt. 22:37) and that all love ultimately comes from God: :”We love because he first loved us (1 John 4:19).
This is, perhaps, because God himself is love. God, as Trinity, exists in relationship. Relationship and love are built into the very character of God. (Note that this doesn’t mean that love is God. It doesn’t allow us to deify love itself, or to say that God is nothing but love. But it does tell us that love is part of the very nature of God.)
